This neighborhood has a varied character that is quiet and leafy below Forest Park in the western section and urban and industrial as one crosses Lefferts Boulevard to the east. Amongst the LIRR train yard and the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center there are small pocket communities of low-rise housing stock filling the interstices. Richmond Hill is known for its stately Queen Anne Victorians on larger-than-usual lots. A few of those are represented here but of equal interest is the variety of urban types such as row houses and semi-detached homes. Color and free-association of architectural elements is more prevalent as one walks the Indo-Caribbean streets in the south of the neighborhood approaching South Richmond Hill (a separate neighborhood below Atlantic Avenue). Its notable residents include the Marx Brothers, Rodney Dangerfield, and most germane to this project, the “muckraking” journalist and social documentary photographer, Jacob Riis.
