Springfield Gardens

The housing stock of this southeastern neighborhood—located directly above JFK airport—is among the most polar opposite of anywhere in the borough. South of the Belt Parkway, it is typical suburban Queens: detached single-family houses and low-rise row-houses in a flat landscape of wide streets. To the north of the parkway, the density is a little greater until one encounters the immense urban island of public housing that is Rochdale Village, the largest affordable housing project in the world, until Co-op City in the Bronx was completed in 1971. The houses featured here are from the southern section of the neighborhood, which also includes the sub-section of Brookville, east of Springfield Boulevard. They are mostly a lively mix of altered tracts, and row housing with personal touches that differentiate them from their twin neighbors. Also included are some recent two-family tear-downs (upper left) taking the place of smaller, original single-family homes (lower right).
