This subsection in southern Flushing is lodged between four parks (Flushing Meadows Corona, Queens Botanical Garden, Kissena Corridor, Kissena) two cemeteries (Cedar Grove and Mount St. Mary) and Queens College and is bisected by the Long Island Expressway. Given all of these urban buffers, one would expect that the neighborhood would feel secluded–like Middle Village, for instance–yet with Flushing’s main artery (Main Street) cutting through in the north-south direction, it stays connected to the strong urban character of Downtown Flushing. The New Lake Pavilion, an enormous banquet-style Cantonese restaurant, is a renovated LA-style diner structure that serves as an eye-catching landmark at the crossroads of this mostly residential neighborhood. The houses featured here–except for the bottom middle triplex–have strong classical references (balusters and fanlight windows) but with modern massing, exaggerated proportions, and bold color.
