This central Queens neighborhood is known for its expansive public housing projects (Pomonok Houses and Electchester Co-op) and its many public and private schools, including Queens College. However, there are some small pockets of low-to-mid-rise housing sprinkled in-between. In most cases they are dwarfed by the surrounding urban character of the neighborhood but there are still a few attempts at quasi-suburban style living with small yards, rear porches, and personal touches. Prior to its transformation into an urban hub, the neighborhood was home to the Pomonok Country Club golf course which hosted the PGA Championship in 1939, the same year as the first World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The word “Paumanok” was used to describe Long Island by the Algonquin tribe but the exact meaning in unclear. The neighborhood is bounded by the Long Island Expressway to the north, Kissena Boulevard to the west, 164th Street to the east, and 73rd Avenue to the south.
