A hotbed of early Hip-Hop culture (see Run-DMC’s Christmas in Hollis) this middle-class neighborhood, which also includes the subsection of Holliswood boasts a bold and eclectic mix of housing styles. Hollis is mostly comprised of single-family residences, with the exception of some large apartment complexes and small multi-family buildings between Jamaica Avenue and the Long Island Railroad tracks. These houses run the gamut from small mid-century split-levels to large Victorian and Federalist mansions. There are a few streets with tracts but for the most part each house was built independently and expresses its own distinctive character. The neighborhood is bounded by Grand Central Parkway to the north, Murdock Avenue to the south, and sandwiched between Jamaica and Queens Village. The winding paths of Hollis Avenue and Jamaica Avenue produce many interesting residential structures that incorporate the irregular geometry of the building lots.
