Even though its name implies a hilly terrain, the streets of Hillcrest are actually quite flat and many of the house typologies reflect this. A little bit of an “everyday LA” vibe can be felt in this central Queens neighborhood due to its wide commercial drag—Union Turnpike—cutting through the center and the modest Mid-century ranches (middle-left and middle center photos) and Post-modern “Palazzos” (bottom-center and bottom-right) sprinkled throughout. Also prevalent are Mock-Tudor and Neo-trad villa style houses. Many less freestanding single-family homes are found in Hillcrest compared to its neighbor to the north, Utopia—also considered a sub-section of the larger Fresh Meadows neighborhood to the east. Hillcrest is bordered by Grand Central Parkway to the south, 73rd Avenue to the north, Utopia Parkway to the east, and Parsons Boulevard to the west. Included within its borders is the St. John’s University Queens Campus.
