The doors of Queens are as diverse as the population itself. Painted in every color, made in every material, and shifting in proportion from one housing type to another, they are the often a unique mark on the house that does not always relate to the whole. This independent character of theirs is why a separate section of photos has been created. Often they simply define a space unto themselves. Equal to the interest of the actual door itself are the arches and overhead structures that cover them. As is typical in all of Queens, the mass-produced, step-down awning covers many of the doorways–sometimes inserted into a pre-existing overhang, many times at odds with the existing architecture–but in others a traditional stone or concrete pediment can be found to grace the header. Adding further character to the whole assembly are the different shape vision glass panels, and their accompanying security grilles, which reinforce the human scale.
