As the borough of Queens developed, it became a suburban borough with suburban dreams. Central to this dream is the detached house, a freestanding structure with no neighbors and none of the irritants of the denser, more urban forms of cohabitation. The houses depicted in this series are the ones that really break out of the mold and express some unique characteristic of the owner’s aesthetic and/or lifestyle preferences. As is the character of most of Queens’ architecture, they are of modest size and scale and very experimental within a traditional framework. They are rendered in all colors and materials (natural or otherwise) and, of course, employ the same “architectural accouterments” as can be found in the rest of the borough. These, more than any other typology, can be thought of as “house portraits”, and they are as varied as the people that occupy them.
